Curriculum
Our preschool program incorporates learning through a terrific curriculum. In that program we strive to enhance self-help skills as well as manners when talking and communicating with their peers and teachers. Our classroom is set up with different areas to ensure structure and organization in the classroom. A variety of learning and educational materials are available and used daily to support each area.
The Pre-K program utilizes a strong student involvement curriculum that involves phonics and a strong reading program. Our focus is to ensure that our students are prepared when entering kindergarten. We work closely with the Sharon Public School to ensure that our children are meeting all of the necessary standards and requirements.
Arena of Learning
At The Learning POD - Stoughton our curriculum follows the Applied Scholastic Program which ensures that our children follow a balanced curriculum focusing on eight areas of learning:

*Math (STEM)
* Understanding of the World (STEM)
* Expressive Art
Personal, Social, and Emotional
Children are guided to obtaining confidence, independence and self-respect. They are encouraged to work individually and also to participate in group activities as well as sharing and functioning with other children and adults. The children are allowed lots of time to role play during thematic areas which helps to build self-confidence. They are also taught how to put items away after each use and at the end of the day which teaches them to take responsibility for themselves. During activities they learn to respect the feelings of their classmates and how to express their own feelings in an appropriate manner. Children are observed and assessed twice a year and areas of further need are addressed through follow-up exercises and activities.
Communication, Language and Development
Children are encouraged to grow their vocabulary by talking and listening as well as by hearing and responding to circle time activities such as stories, songs, and rhymes. During this time the children are encouraged to talk about their experiences and to listen to others. Staff make sure all children feel valued and included by use of stories, pictures, puppets and other media during this time.
Physical Development
We conduct a whole range of activities, which will promote the use of their large and small muscles. Fine motor skills will consist of puzzle making, lacing, drawing and painting. All these activities help children to use their hands and fingers to gain to gain control of their movements. For more physical play children will have opportunity to use larger muscles during outside time by running, jumping, throwing balls, climbing, etc. We encourage the children to develop awareness of their own bodies and how to keep them healthy.
Literacy
Children are taught to understand that written symbols carry meaning to understand the purpose of writing and when ready to learn to draw and use these symbols themselves.
We teach children to recognize their names and to spell it correctly. There is a word wall for children to repeat verbally and visibly see each word. The introduction of sight words begins.
There is a large variety of tools available for children to use (Paint brushes, felt tips, pens). Use of these tools helps children to develop hand/eye co-ordination in readiness for writing. We practice both letter names and sounds to help children make the connection between the symbol and sound.
Our library section is well stocked with great books of interest and children are encouraged to become familiar with books, taught how to treat them and made aware of their usage.
Math
Children become familiar with the sorting, matching and counting activities that form the basis for early mathematics. The children learn through play with puzzles, beads, sorting, etc. Numbers are reinforced through games, matching activities and simple computer games.
Sand, water and dough are provided to help children learn about volume, size and shape. Children learn to complete patterns, which help them think logically.
Song, games/picture books help children become aware of numbering sequences. Simple mathematical operations such as adding will be introduced.
Understanding the World
This arena covers a wide range of skills in science, technology, history and geography.
Children will observe and experiment with a range materials both natural and manufactured. They learn to recognize differences, patterns, similarities and to share their findings, Children will learn basic concepts such as "floating and sinking".
The children are encouraged to take care of their environment, to observe plants, flowers and insects and see how they live and grow.
The community they live in his important to teach them about. We also introduce people from other countries.
Children may use simple computer programs and learn how to operate them.
Expressive Art and Design
Children are encouraged to use a wide range of resources to express their creativity. Paint, glue, crayons, pencils and markers provide for open-ended exploration of color, shape and texture. Painting easels and drawing tables are always available for children to express themselves.
